Bradford & Cookbury Energy Saving Project
Monday March 30 2009
Last year, in common with Parish Councils around the UK, Bradford & Cookbury Parish Council was required to carry out a survey to form a 10 year Parish Plan.
One comment made by around 15% of responders related to fuel costs in one way or another. We picked up this point to see what we as Bradford & Cookbury Parish Council could do to help our parishioners with this major problem. As a result we are holding a Green Energy Exhibition in Bradford & Cookbury Village Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 7 April 2009 to which all (not only our own parishioners) are welcome.
The aims of Bradford & Cookbury Green Energy Group, representing the Parish Council, are two fold:
1) To form bulk purchasing groups on behalf of our own parishioners to obtain the lowest possible prices and thus reduce the outlay for fuels such as central heating oil and solid fuels; the latter encompassing a) supplies of wood for fires, wood burners, and the popular multifuel & wood-burning cooking & central heating stove installations and b) coal, anthracite, lignite, & other similar fuels for home use.
2) To provide information to one and all on the cheapest and most cost effective methods of energy micro-generation, so-called ‘green energy’. To this end we are investigating solar energy (heat from the sun), photovoltaic energy (producing at least some of your own electricity), air source heat pumps (works like a fridge in reverse by pumping heat extracted from outside air into the house), and ground source heat pumps in either sub-surface coils or deep boreholes (the latter of which if sited appropriately might also allow the householder(s) to obtain their own private water supply and thus reduce their reliance on public water suppliers and the costs therein.)
We have invited several firms producing and/or installing their green energy systems & products each to supply and man a display. Each will be offered a short slot to talk about their various green energy sources, and will be available to answer any questions from the general public for a few minutes.
We hope to attract members of the public not only from our own parish, but also from other local parishes in the area who may be concerned about the ever increasing spiral of fuel costs around the home. We hope that our example may stimulate other parish councils or groups of householders to consider how best they may help their own groups in the fight against high fuel costs.
Confirmed exhibitors are as follows:
1) Sophie Phillips, Renewable Energy Adviser with Renewable Energy 4 Devon
2) Elaine’s stoves and Flues Okehampton
3) Magrec: photo voltaic, wind etc. Demo van and display boards
4) Sam Whatmore: Wood and fuel supplies
5) Paul Smith: Solstice Energy co. Photo voltaic (possibly Stirling engine)
6) Macmurdie: solar, thermal, wood fuel
7) Celticsolar: Solar thermal and ground source.
Please come along to the Green Energy Exhibition; Bradford & Cookbury Village Hall, Tues. 7th April 2009 at 7.30pm. Light refreshments also available. « read less

"Save the Albatross Fund"
Tuesday December 9 2008
Save your stamps from cards this year and help to raise money to buy a special device that stops the birds being caught up on fishing hooks. The old methods of fishing are killing many birds each year and they are in danger of becoming extinct.
December is the time when we all receive more post than at any other time of the year and it requires little effort to tear the stamps from the envelope.
I would be quite happy to send these all on in January if people were to drop them in my letter box or I will collect in person if there is a problem.

I Love the Sun - Bradford’s Beneficial Children
Tuesday October 14 2008
I Love the Sun
‘I love the sun’ was a prescient choice of song, to start proceedings at the first meeting of BBC – Bradford’s Beneficial Children, on 11th October. A happy gathering of parents, grandparents, children and assorted helpers, as well as Kathy and David, played games, made pictures, listened to stories, sang songs, participated in prayer and did lots of eating and drinking at Bradford Village Hall, on a glorious sunny morning.
Thanks are due to all those who made this event possible and who, we hope, will make the second Saturday of every month equally enjoyable – the above activities only come about through lots of thought, co-operation, and communication – all abundant in this venture, including Bradford School and pre-school, who kindly publicised it with flyers, Black Torrington musicians and young helpers, Bradford ‘refreshments team’, all those who donated toys, all those who offered time before and on the day, and the commitment of both Kathy and David, whose prayers and inspiration generated such a positive atmosphere.
If you would like to be involved in any way with BBC, either as a helper or because you, or someone you know wants to come along with children, of any age, either come to the next meeting, at 10.30 on 8th November, or contact:
Gina: 01409 281652, Morag: 01409 281800, Kathy: 01409 231448

Bradford & Cookbury Parish Council: News
Tuesday April 29 2008
Annual General Public Meeting on Wednesday 14th May at 7.30 in the Village Hall.
Come and see what your parish council is doing on your behalf.
Parish Plans: These have now been delivered throughout the parish.
A Bio-Diversity audit by Devon CC is currently underway to assess the current flora and fauna of the parish. This will be a useful appendix to our 10 year parish plan.
In conjunction with the Road Safety Action group, the council has negotiated with Area North Highways for further safety improvements at Brandis Corner. A “Keep Clear” section will be added to the Holemoor road at the junction to give emerging traffic space to reverse back into in an emergency.
Plans are allegedly forthcoming for Wind Turbines on land “south of Dunsland Cross near Brandis Corner”. More information as soon as we know.
BT wishes to close the Phone Box at Priestacott. Please provide your objections, if any, before the end of June 2008.
The PC has formally complained to Torridge about the recycling waste being deposited throughout our lanes. This has been acknowledged and an undertaking has been received from both Torridge and South Molton recycling that the nuisance will be addressed. Please inform the Parish clerk if you have any further evidence of this problem re-occuring.

Parish News from Bradford & Cookbury Parish Council
Monday March 3 2008
The Parish Plan has now been completed and will be delivered to all households within the Parish shortly.
Some of the issues raised are already being addressed:-
New Signs for the ‘Village Hall’ and ‘Bradford Church’ were ordered by the Parish Council from SW Highways and these have now been installed at: Blackgate, Middlecott, Holemoor and Lana Cross. These will aid new visitors to locate two of our most important buildings.

Three new notice boards have been ordered and are currently under construction.
These will aid parish communications; a requirement identified in the Parish Plan. The siting of these additional boards is provisionally set for: - Brandis Corner, Priestacott and Middlecott. The existing locations are: Blackgate, Cookbury, Holemoor and the Village Hall.
If you have an alternative siting suggestion please let the Parish clerk know: - bandcparishclerk@yahoo.co.uk
Road Safety Action Group
With the full support of the Parish Council, District Councillor Gaye Tabor and Devon County Councillor Des Shadrick, the group are campaigning for a 40mph speed restriction and other improvements to increase safety at Brandis Corner.
A technical meeting is due on the 7th March at Barnstaple with the Highways department. A report of this meeting will be made to a public meeting at the Bickford Arms on Tuesday 11th March at 8pm.
Parish Council meetings are held every second Wednesday of the Month at the Village Hall commencing 7.30pm
Next Meetings are: March 12th and April 9th
